The first time I saw Matisse’s trio of Three Sisters paintings at the Barnes eleven years ago, I decided that I wanted to do my own version. The paintings reminded me of a childhood photograph of my sister and me playing dress-up with our mother’s silk scarves, along with my best friend, Robin Deutsch, and our cat, Frisky.

When Robin and I were friends, her father owned a dry cleaning business. I didn’t realize that he also collected art. I guess that’s why their little white dog was named Matisse. My family moved to another town when Robin and I were both eight, and we lost touch with each other, but I found out that a few years later, her father opened the Sid Deutsch Art Gallery on 57th Street in New York.
